CHARGING FOR SECONDARY EDUCATION.

* SUGGESTED IN AUSTRALIA. •A recent cable message from Sydney stated that the Minister of Education lad said bliat the congestion in the primary schools of New South Wales was so serious that the Government must shortly consider the question. of ■ charging for secondary education, as for some tim& to come, it would be unable to afford iby any other means to provide further educational facilities in that direction. When seen iby a "Star" reporter this morning, the Hon. Geo. Fowlds, chairman of the Auckland University College Council, said that he was entirely' opposed to such a change, as far as New Zealand was concerned. "Even in times of financial depression, he said, education is,not a matter-that can afford to be neglected. Having once established the system of free secondary education for all tihose who show fitness by securing entrance, it is quite a mistake to revert to the old system. The expenditure on .buildings for secondary schools is to 6omc extent neglected in Australia, while in the Dominion we have teen making unusual provision for secondary schools, consequently there is not the same need in New Zealand," Mr. Fowlds stated.
