NEW GOLDFIELD IN N.S.W.
« ENCOURAGING PROSPECTS. DISCOYEKY IN COIIAK DISTRICT. A great deal of excitement has been aroused throughout the lobar mining district. New South Wales, by the discovery of a number of reefs, which appear on the surface to have all the indications of good, permanent lodes, and may lie a new field. The find is located at Muriel Tank, and is two miles south of the railway. Mr. Robert Toomey. sen., and his son, with .Messrs. Prendergast and Shannon, have been prospecting with Government aid. in a deserted show, lately held by Mr. R. Lyons, which has revealed that the crown of several saddles had been gone through, and a large formation, carrying rich gold, going many ounces to the ton, had been discovered. Toomey's tind was followed by Mr. Joe Gould discovering an outcrop, carrying gold, about a mile south. This was a different class of stone from that in Toomey's find. Another half-mile south Messrs. Treverrow and Taylor uncovered a reef of blue quartz, with gossan characteristics. This proved to be Oft wide, carrying gold from ."kiwi (o an ounce. Mr. .1. Rutler exposed another reef, also carrying gold. Of fifteen specimens broken therefrom, gold was visible in each with the naked eye. His son al«i has located another show adjacent. Mr. W. .1. Scobie has a line reel" expose.l, and has taken up -~i acres. Mr. Walter Osbourne, sen., is also on a good reef of exceedingly hard quartz, carrying good gold. Miners sny the country is good, .mil the reefs are well defined. So far as can be judged, they appear to be different lines, as the stone seems to have dhtinet characteristics, l-'ree gold is visible in every case, and it is asserted there are true fissure reefs, with cverv indication of depth and stability. Mr. Jacques, chief mining inspector. ; s reported to have stated on his last visit to Messrs. Toomey's show that there were very good indications on the field. Forty years ago very good alluvial gold was found whilst sinking pier positions for a railway overhead reservoir. The visit of a competent Government official, who can give some advice and authoritative opinion about the find is much to be desired. The scarcity of water is a considerable disability. Messrs. Toomey have shown the greatest perseverance in prosecuting their search at Muriel Tank, haviiur made five attacks on it. At various times want of capital forced them to relinquish it, to return as opportunity occurred.
