DEATH OF SPY.
LESLIE WARD CARTOONIST. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 111. The death occurred 10-day of Mr. Leslie Ward, the cartoonist.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) Few cartoonists have earned fama app-oaching that of Leslie Ward, "Spy"' of Vanity Fair. He was born in Loudon in 1851, and was educated at Eton and Barnes. He studied architecture under Sydney Sir..irkc, R.A.. and was a student in the schools of the Royal Academy •when his talent fur caricature began to develop. He joined the staff of Vanity Fair in 1573, and from then till 100!) produced weekly cartoons and caricatures of noted politicians. Hi« work was marked by great strength and fidelity, and to become a subject for "Spy" was to set the seal on political fame, his victims being among his warmest admirers. Of late years he had turned his attention chiefly to portrait work, exhibiting in the Royal Academy and elsewhere.
