EXIT THE TALISMAN. PLANT TO BE DISMANTLED. One of the best known New Zealand mines, the Talisman, Karangabake, will Foon be a thing of the past, as the compajiy Is now being finally wound up. The whole of the assets have been sold to R. M. Alr.ken and Son. of Auckland, who commence Immediately dismantling the plant and machinery. TrMARU WOOL SALE. A SUBSTANTIAL ADVANCE. TIMARU, WednesdayThe final wool sale of the season was held to-dar. Considering the lateness of <he season a very good selection was offered. Competition was very keen, and prices showed a substantial advance on recent rates. Super merino was quoted at si bout, par, and Inferior at a considerable advance. . Halfbred showed an advance of from id to 2d, three-quarter-bred an advance of ii to lid, crossbred from par to ajd advance. Tbere was a fair 'bench of buyers, but some well-known faces were absent, and tnree of the largest -woollen mills were not represented. Most of the large wool houses, howevßr, were represented. "Fully 99 Be r cent of the tptal of 3016 bales catalogued was sold under the hammer. Following was the range of prices:— Jlerlno. super 16Jd to 181 d, medium MJd to 161(1, inferior 12d to 14} d. That British manufacturers are "out after trade" is evidence* by the fact that the Export Trade Council te circularising firms all over the Empire. These point ont that the Immense productive capacity of toe ITnited Kingdom necessitates the expansion of British trade in fresh channels. The Council aims at assisting firms abroad who have no buying agents In Great Britain. No commissions are paid by any party In reepect to business transacted leaving; the arrangement of credits, effecting insurance, shipment of goods, etc., to the indent houses. Arrangements have also been made for the Inquiry 'Exchange to introduce business to manufacturers, and a cable reception bureau has been established to receive messages from abroad, decode them, and forward on to manufacturers. COTTON GROWING IN FIJI. SUVA, April 28. Tie Government have yielded to the public demand, and have sent Inquiries Home to see what assistance can be obtained from the British Cotton Growing Association in ■the development of cotton growing In FLI--•A sreat number of oSere—largely from Indian farmers —have been received offerIng to take np the industry, and there la no donbt, even in the official mind, that If a ■start were made, the industry would again flourish here. About forty years ago Fiji's clileC export was cotton, and her cotton lint tqpped the world's market, and as there is a growing belief In the public mini that It Is -wise to have several baskets for our industrial eggs. It Is hoped that planting will be commenced In time Sot next season.
