Mr. B. C. Chilwell, district president of the New Zealand Institute oi Architects, left for .Wellington last night to attend an executive meeting. Thirty-four cadets ranging in age from 17i to 21 rears, are included in tho ship's company on the Makalla, which arrived nt the Queen's wharf this morning. These I>oys are being trained for officer? under the new scheme developed by the Anchor. Brockle'bund and Cunard Line towards the end of the war. Originally the cadets underwent early training in various ship* of the. company on the England-India service, three or four gcmrfllly being with each steamer. In 1918 the boye were taken from the ships on the PJastern service to man the two training ships' now in .commission, namely the Makalla and the Mathcran. The Makalla is now under charter to the Commonwealth anc'i Dominion Line, and the Mathcran ! continues in the Indian service. At night time turns are taken in the natch,: three boyg and an officer composing the watch on deck.
