AUCKLAND RAILWAY BRIDGES.
% SATD XO IKE DAXGaEaOTJS. HEAVY MOTOR. LOKEX LOADS. The council of the Auckland Chamber of CamLmerce yesterday received a. camnxnnicatian from. J. J. Craig, Ltd.. drawing attention to the railway bridges in Manukau Pond, at the entrance to Newmaxket. and at Khyber Pass and Marrnt Eden. These hridgeas, it was =ra-»i | were erected before it was anticirjated that motor traction would have deveicped to ita present state, and canseorteiiLly were not constructed to stand the heavyweights with which they are taxed to-day. The firm stated that it had motor lorries ■iS-hich, inclusive of their own weight, scmetimes carried up to 13 tons weight. There were also steam wagons operating over these bridges which, when leaded, weighed up to 14 tens. As these structures were not meant to carry more than 10 tons axle load, it would be opportune to make representations to the RaiiwaT Depai-fcmerrr; to have these bridges reconstructed on the lines of all similar constructions, in England, which are in arch, 'brick, as unless some improvement was made in the near future, there was every likelihood of accidents cccurririg. Uncertainty was expressed by members, who realised the seriousnese of the ■matter, as to what extent local bodies were responsible for the ctrndrtian of the hndgea, and the secretary was instructed to write and ask what steps Messrs. Craig had taken to bring tira natter before the. local hodias etrrj.ceraed.
