PARNELL SCHOOL.
THE ST. STEPHEN'S SITE. Mr. H. W. King, member of the Boar.i of Education, traversing the attitude of the Board in the matter of the St. Stephen's site for a primary school for Parnell, states that published report* and comments put a wrong construction on the question. The deed of trust provides that the lands now in part occu- | pied by the Maori School ehall be devoted "to educational purposes, and no distinction is made ac to race, the provision being equally applicable to Maori and European. The Education Board's original proposal vras that the Trust Board should exchange the wbole site for a block of land of equal value outside the city where a Maori School eouU be conducted with equal facilities. This was declined. Its second suggestion i.that an area of four acres not utilised ifor the school, but leased for cosnmer- | cial purposes, should be the site of a new ; primary school. This aleo the Trust I Board has opposed. The contention is I that the use of the area for a school fox European children, far from being a. breach of the terms of the trust, would be in furtherance of ito objects and the intention of its founders. The Education Board and the administrators of I fie endowment differ on this point, and j negotiations hare proved abortive.
