PRIMATE OF NEW ZEALAND.
BISHOP JULIUS ELECTED. The members of the Anglican General Synod yesterday unanimously elected Bishop Julius, of Christchurcfh, the Primate of New Zealand. His nomination came unanimously from the bishops of the province, and when submitted to the clergy and laity f jt was endorsed without a dissentient vote. In offering •the congratulations of bishops, clergy and laity, Dr. Averill, speaking as chief bishop under the new Primate, expressed regret that tfhey had not met and made the appointment prior to the Lambeth Conference, which would have enabled Bishop Julius to have filled a position at the Conference that was hie right. The speaker also expressed the hope that the church here would fall into line trith other communities, and call their Primate the Archbishop of New Zealand. The sentiments voiced by Dr. Averill were endorsed by Dean Fitchett, of Dnnedin, and Mr. C. A. de Latour, of Gics'borne, on behalf of the clergy and laity. In making a feeling acknowledgment of the unanimous appointment and the sentiments expressed, Bishop Julius remarked that he had had 32 years' connection with the province of Xcw Zealand, and was deeply conscious of shortcomings and mistake?. He felt that the church wanted leadership, youth and strength, and that all lie could bring was love and devotion to the-'r cause. Consequently they would understand the cheer that this sign of esteem and confidence had brought to an old man, and prayed that the Synod would have patience with him in his efforts.
