COUNCIL BY-ELECTION.

POLLING DAY. The election of two members to the City Council to fill the vacancies caused by the deaths of Mr. H. D. Heather and Mr. P. M. Mackay is taking place to-day, the four candidates contesting the seats being Messrs. E. J. Phelan and R. F. Barter, nominated by the Labour party, and Messrs. S. I. Crookes and A. E. Lawrv. nominated by the Progressive Citizens' j Election Committee. The poll closes at I 7 p.m., and the result of the election will j be posted outside the "Star"' office as soon ac the figures are available, which will probably be in the vicinity of 8.30. The prospects from appearances at some of the main polling places to-day are for a small poll, as little interest seems to be 1 taken in the election by the electors. i
