AMERICAN MAILS.

SOME EXFLAXATIOXS. The Canadian Trade Commissioner in Auckland (Mr. \V. A. Beddoe) has written to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce in reply to several questions. 1 "There is," says the Commissioner, "no copy of the Sales Tax Act in this office, but I am sending to Canada for information. Sir Byron Walker, president of the Bank of Commerce, had saki in his annual statement to the shareholders that he had steadily urged a tax of one per cent on sales of commodities, but that the system in present line in Canada was in a partial and illogical form. Nevertheless it produced a large revenue. He was in favour of the tax being used entirely to pay expenses incurred by the war. "With" respect to the fear- expressed that the Union Company was inclined to concentrate its business in -Wellington, I beg to state that the Union Company has aothing whatever to do with thpmails except to carry them. They do not exercise the slightest jurisdiction in any matter as to the time of sending or the route, which are entirely matters for the Governments concerned. It may be misleading to some to note that a boat from San Francisco to -Wellington has 1258 6acks of mail, as came by the Marama, unless you have the information that of this number of sacks 557 were parcel post originating in the United States. All parcel post from the United. States comes via San Francisco, but mail may come through either San Francisco or Vancouver. "With respect to the Makura's mail going Xorth on the last voyage, she carried 2SG sacks, of which 140 originated in Auckland and district, and 137 in Wellington and the South. There is always a much larger mail arrives in Xew "Zealand than leaves this country."
