DEATH OF MR. R. THOMPSON.

The death took place yesterday of Mr Robert Thompson, formerly M.P. foi Marsden, who was well known in Wha ngarei for many years. Mr. Thompsoi was born 82 years ago in Ireland. Ii his early days he spent some time in thi West Indies, and later came out to th( colonies, being eventually attracted b; New Zealand and making his home ii 1870 in Whangarei, where he had i farm and also started a land and com mission business. He always took i keen interest in politics, and after serv ing on local bodies was elected as mem ber for Marsden in 1887, retaining hi seat until 1902. when he was defeat© by Mr. F. Mander. From his long asso ciation with the constituency Mi Thompson was known as 'Marsdei Thompson." Deceased leaves a daugh ter, Mrs. G. Bruton Sweet, of Remuera Auckland.
