FLAW IN THE ACT.
'DAILY MIRROR " ESCAPES. CONVICTION QUASHED. LOXDOX", March 20. A flaw in the Grand Jury Suspension Act resulted in the Court" of Criminal Appeal quashing the conviction of the "Daily JJirror" Company, and upholding the appellant's contention that it was impossible under the Act to commit a corporation f»r trial. Sir. Justice Shearman said that the draftsman of the bill forgot all about corporations and left a little hole through which the '"Daily Mirror" v.-as able to creep, but the point did not affect the general law regarding corporations. The appeal of the "Daily Mirror" employee against his conviction - .va> I dismissed. The conviction of the "Daily Mirror" Company and of one of its employees in the circulation department was for a violation of the Representation of the Peoples Act by placarding the East Herts constituency in the recent by-elec-tion vith contents hill supporting. RearAdiraral Snc-tcr, the Anti-Wagte candidate, who was elected. / The defendant company pleaded thai its object wae merely to increase circulation, but was fined £100- The employee in the circulation department was fined £20. His conviction, according to the cable, still stands, but- the company now goes free.
