MR. GEORGE ELLIOT.

A REMARKABLE CAREER. NEW BANK CHAIRMAN. Mr. George Elliot, who has been elected chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand, is a Scotsman by birth, being a native of Jedburgh. With his brother, Mr. William Elliot, he arrived in Auckland in July, 1891, and for some time they were engaged in the ftaxmilling industry. Later they returned to the city and founded the business of agents with which they are now associated. For three years Mr. Elliot has been a director of the bank a? 'the representative of the Government. Hβ was president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce for the year 1911-12, and in March. 1912, he was elected president of the Exhibition Commissioners. During the war he was a member of the National Efficiency Board, also a- member of the Military Service Board presided over by Mr. F. J. Burgess, S.M-. At present he is an executive member of the Auckland Patriotic Association. In 1019 he was appointed and acted as chairman of the commission which inquired into the influenza epidemic in Samoa. The following year he again visited the islands as chairman of the commission investigating the trade relations between New Zealand and Samoa, Fiji, and the other islands of the Pacific.
