CRIES FOR HELP.
DROWNING MAN'S PLIGHT. RESCUED FROM HARBOUR. A man who was too far gone to give, an account of himself was rescued from the harbour shortly after a quarter-pa.st nine last evening. It was during the 9.1.5 run of the Britannia from Auckland to Bayswater that cries were heard from the 3Ca in the vicinity of the hulks off Stanley Point by those aboard the ferry steamer. The steamer was hove-to and a lifeboat was launched, the mate, Mr. &.. Aickin. mid two passengers putting off in it and making in the direction from where th? cries came. The cries were also heard aboard the Portland Cement Co.'s steamer Mahurangi, and a member of the crew dived overboard with a lifebelt to rescue the man in distress. /The boat reached the man first and after lie was lifted aboard, the intending rescuer, with his life-heit. was also taken aboard. The party who had been threatened with death by drowning wos practically helpless, and could not explain how- he came to get into the water. He was placed aboard the Jtahurangi. and Devonport being handiest, was taken there for medical treatment.
