VICTORIA CKUISIIfG CLUB. ('RPISIXG AND HARBOUR HACKS. GOOD RACING IX A LIGHT SOL'THEIMA" The Victoria Cruising Club held a cruising race for vaehts aud launches to Awaroa Bay. Waiheke. on Saturday, also a re-sal. race for the IS-foot class over their harbour course, and a general handicap tor the combined small classes, for which no less than :{?, boats started. There was a nice topsail breeze blowing all the afternoon from due south, which allowed all races to finish early. This gave tbe boats which took part in the cruising race a lead from the starting line to Lookout Point, Awaron Bay.

In the two harbour events the course gave the boats a lead to the first mark off the tide deflector, a run to the mark in fihoal Bay. a close haul on the port tack to the Watchman mark, and a lead back to the finishing line. Ou the second round 1 lie wind drew a little to the south-west, which necessitated a few short tacks being made to the top mark, but the face was sailed In quick time, Secret, the scratch boat In the 18-foot class, taking 111 8m 3Us to complete the course, and Desert Gold 3m l(Js longer In the general handicap.

All races started from the dredge Maui oft St. Mary's Bay. the officers for the day being: Starter and judge for harbour races. Mr. A. Deacon: timekeepers. Messrs. 0. Johnson and P. Boonstra. 'Mr. T. L. Thompson was judge at Awaroa Bay.

At the conclusion of the cruising races a social was held in Gordon's Hall, which was largely attended by yachtsmen and visitors. The following are the racing details:—

Launches.—This event was sent off to Awaroa Bay flt 2.20 p.m.. only Ella. Matiitrere and Jean Grey starting, in this order. Klla soon opened up a lead, with Manurere second, and the finish was:—Ella (ser). 4h 2Sm 30s: Maunrere (20m), 4h 40m 40s: .leau Grey (47m). 5h Dm 30s. Corrected times place .lean Grey first. Ella second, and ! Manurere third.

MACKAT MEMORIAL SHIELD. This was a pretty start, all the boats lying close to the line at gunfire. Omatere was smartest away, quickly followed by Waitere. Qoeenie. Wairlki. Rouen. Starlight. Gloaming. Celox. Kctare. Restless. 'Mowai. Walma, Yum Yum, Rona and Gloriana. All bad leading jibs «et for the 16 mile stretch to Awaroa Bay, and off Queen's wharf Qneenie was leading, with Omatere, Waitere. Wairiki and Restless following in this order. OtT Victoria wharf Restless drew up with the leaders, and led for the rest of ihe race. Waitere and Queenie having a great go for second place. Sea Sleigh, Ben Bolt, and Maseotte. The boats were all close together at the tide deflector mark. On the run to the Shoal Bay mark Secret took tin- lead and was never afterwards headcil. Sea Sleigh worked into second place. Ben Bolt third and Maseotte fourth, this being the order on completion of the first round. GENERAL HANDICAP. SMALL CLASSES. This was one of the prettiest starts ever seen on the harbour, the whole of the 33 boats gettlne away within a minute of gunflre. Several collisions took place rounding the first mark, but all pushed oK each other and carried on in a good sporting spirit. Keen interest was taken in the meeting of the 14ft one-design boats with the boats of t-ho 14-foot flatMe class, which met for the frst time in the same race. Desert Gold bent the whole field home by over two minutes, Sea Gnome, the crack flattie, being third. Nyria. which was "first away, was leading at the first mark with Desert Goto, .second, then c.imc 'Sea Spook. Sea Gnome and Cupid. On the run to ■Shoal .Bay mark Desert Gold passed 'Nyria and they rounded In this order, Joan being third, Cupid fourth. Sea Gnome fifth, and Sea 'Spook. Idler and Valet following close behind. On the close haul to the top mark Desert Gold improved he r position and tbe times of completing the first round were Desert Gold 3m 34m 40s. Sea S-ponk 3h 35m 355, Joan 3h 30m 255.
