THE FARMER'S UNION.
PROVINCIAL STATUS APPROVED. The president of the Farmers' Union (Mr. VV. J. Poison) mentioned at tlie j meeting of the Dominion executive that several of the sub-provincial districts were asking for provincial status. He thought that they should be allowed to have it. Local control mode for increased interest and the enlargement of the annual conference was not a serious matter. Mr. R. Duxiield (Horotiu) said that Auckland felt that the present system of representation at the annual conference was unfair. Tlie trouble -might be accentuated by tho subdivisions that were being suggested. Auckland h:o.d very little more representation at the annual conference than Westland. He thought that there should be a grouping of* the smaller districts. Auckland would not object to the formation of additional provincial areas as long as there was a fair adjustment of representation at tlie conference. Tlie president said that under the amended rules Auckland would be entitled to ten representatives at the conference. The small unions were entitled to two members, but seldom sent more than one member. Direct representation gave the best results. He did not see any serious objection to the enlaragement of tlie annual conference. Some general discussion on the point followed. It was suggested that the Auckland district was too large, and ought to be divided into smaller provincial areas, as had been done in other parts of the country. The executive decided to recommend the Dominion conference to grant provincial status tcthe districts that asked for it.
