SMITH SHIELD. The Smith Shield race. the rowinj event of the year. was rowed jH Saturday afternoon. l'rom the Waitemata Clubs shed. There was a large attendance of rowing enthusiast-, and keen interest was token in the ra ing. Unfortunately the Hamilton crew-, which was looked upon as ihe probable winners, were unable to travel, and favouritism was divided between St. George's, Waitemata, aud Auc—and.
The weather conditions were not §»'i. The wind was blowing in strongly f• m the north-west, causing a rather choppy, sea. G. smith, the donor of the shield, and Mr. G. U. The Waitemata four challenged this advantage and assumed the lead soon After pa-sing th" King's wharf. Waitetunta. about fifty yards from the line, drew away again, but St. ireorce's wltb a good swinging stroke came oil and won by about six fen. with Auckland, third. Final.-- Crews stroked by Fr.llas and Harvey faced the starter for rue final of the North Shore Club's trial four* for trophies presented by Mr. 11. Gruhb. Thcrews got well away together, but halfway Follas took the Vad and won.by half a length. The winning .row was: R. Follas (strokei. 11. Ar-ncr I'll. Scott (2), Lucas (bowl. ROTORUA REGATTA. The Rotorua Regatta, to 1... he.l on Easter Saturday. April 15. provides the final ! programme of the season for oarsmen. Sli I races are provided, and donations amount ing to £40 have beeu allotted.
