RATS IN MINES.

A PLEA FOR SCAVENGERS,

(By Telegraph—Own COrrespondent)

WAIHI, this day. At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council last evening a communication was read from the Minister of Health relative to plague precautions, with particular reference to the destruction of rats. During the following discussion a difference of opinion arose in regard to the advisability of destroying rats in mines. Councillor Parker, who is secretary and workmen's inspector for the Miners' Union, said rats in mines were excellent scavengers, as they cleaned up the crib cuddies (places used by underground men to eat crib in), thus averting a nuisance and possibly disease. The council resolved to take the opinion of the Miners' Union as to the wisdom or otherwise of destroying rats underground.
