Arthur Bryce Peden, a mining assayer, after being convicted of the murder ot his wife, who was found with her head almost severed at Humblong, near Gundagai, in May last year, has been released. The case was heard five times. When Peden was first tried the jury i disagreed. He was tried again a few weeks later and found guilty and recommended to mercy. The Government later appointed Mr. Justice Street, a Royal Commission, to investigate- the case. He reported that the evidence showed a substantial degree of doubt, and recommended Peden'Sj release. i The defence at the trial was that the wife was of suicidal tendencies, and had ! taken her own life.—(A. and N.Z.)
