DAIRY HERDS.
RAISING THE STANDARD. I ■' FARMERS' UNION DISCUSSION. The branding of culled cows and the raising- of the dairying standard in tlie Dominion, matters of great import to the dairying community of the Dominion, were discussed at "the last meeting of the executive of the Kaipara sub-pro-viucial district of the Farmers' Union. A letter was read from Dr. Reakes stating that if a brand or earmark were set aside to be used at thefarmers' option to indicate that a cow belonged to that class, he did not consider the arrangement, would be used to any appreciable extent. Mr. Jag. McLeod expressed his opinion that all unprofitable dairy cowa should be branded or earmarked, and bear an ear disc, which would be stamped to indicate the butterfat production of the coiv. No action was taken. In respect to raising the dairying standard in the Dominion several remits were drawn up for consideration by the next Auckland provincial conference of the Farmers' Union. These urged that the Government bring in legislation next session .that would result in a raising of the standard..
■(1) That it'be made compulsory for all suppliers of milk or cream, to dairy and cheese factories of the Dominion, to register their cows, and- have them tested as to butterfat production by the <luly authorised tester of the 'factory they are supplying; and that all cows that have been so registered when sold shall.be sold under a written guarantee (if so required) as to their soundness at time of such sale.
