LORD LEVERHULME REBUKED.
FLIPPANT USE OF A TEXT. CASTIGATED BY METHODISTS. (Received 31.510 a.m.) LONDON, January 29. The flippant use of a scriptural text got Lord Levcrhulme into hot water with the Wesleyans. who are takinp official action as a protest. The incident occurred at the Premier's eleraonstration at the Central Hall on January 21. Lord Levcrhulme, who presided said that the l'remicr and the Govern ment have determined that every Treasury note of theirs shall lie honoured. Across them were written tbe words, "1 know that my redeemer liveth." Protesters starteel tbe ball rolling by writing to the "Times,'" especially obi jecting to the laughter anel cheers with which the remark was grecteel. Tlie "Methenrist Times." under the heading. '"Blasphemy at Central Hall," announces that the trustees will not let the hall again for objectionable purposes. It is pointed out that Ixird Levcrhulme only repeated words actually written on the American greenback after the Civil War. Strict Puritans did not find the quotation offensive. Others present at the meeting declare that many were profoundly shocked, including the Premier. This was the real reason why the gathering kept up the cry of "Time." causing Lord i.everhulrae to terminate his speech. Tbe previous explanation was that the gathering was merely impatient to hear the Premier. The trustees' spokesman says: "'We cannot have this sort of thing in Weslevan headquarters."' —(A. and N.Z.)
