SUNDAY SPORT.

« 'A PROTEST AT TAIHAPE. At the last meeting of the Taihape Borough Council, a letter, signed by the Revs. W. F. Stent, J. C. Loan, and W. Lea. protesting against the Oval Domain being used for the purpose of playing cricket on Sundays was read. The three clergymen requested that the council adopt such measures at will prevent tho domain being used for the purposes of sport on Sundays. The Mayor, Mr. A. J. Joblin, said that so far as he was concerned there could be no objection to cricket on Sundays, as ho and his people played tennie on that day. Before he could vote in .favour of stopping cricket on Sundays he would have to put his own houee in. order. He moved that the writers of the letter be informed that until the council sees anything objectionable irt Sunday cricket, they do not consider it advisable to interfere. The motion was seconded by Mr. Lenihan, and was carried unanimously: buf Mr. Reid, who admitted that he played cricket on Sundays, did not vote, beinj of the opinion that the question was a religious one, and did not concern him as a member of the council. The Rev. W. Lea has announced that he is preaching a special sermon in reply to the Mayor, and that printed copies of the sermon will be circulated.
