MELBOURNE, this day. Leading Trades Union officials stat'-i that the industrial unions are ready to co-operative with the conference of men and employers suggested by Mr. W. M. Hughes for the amicable discussion of the industrial situation. In making the suggestion Mr. Hughes said he feared that if some such conference were not held without delay Australia would be in the middle of an industrial crisis. The Federal Cabinet unanimously supports Mr. Hughes proposed conference. Invitations have been issued and it will probably be held about the 14th of February. It is undeTstood that if it proves successful Mr. Hughes »ntends to bring int operation the powers the Commonwealth possesses under the InduslTial Peace Act providing <or the establishment of a council of industrial representatives whose powers will be similar to those of the Whitley Councils in England.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) RESENT ATTACK ON BASIC WAGE. SYDNEY. January 26. Referring bo the report that tbe New South Wales Board o< Trade is to sit on February 2 to reconsider its recent declaration fixing the basic wage at £4 2/ for adult males, the Premier, Mr. Dooley, states thnt he will fight strenuously against any such attenvpb by the Board of Trade, as he doubts if the hoard has that power.
