NOR'-EASTER ABATES
I RISE IN BAB.OMEER. CALM FOLLOWS STORM. I i In striking contrast with the rough i weather in Auckland yesterday the I waters of the Waitemata were scarcely | ruffled this morning, and. with the abateI ment of the gale when the wind veered j round to south-east, the sky gradually became brighter. A heavy swell was i still rolling outside the gulf this mornI ing, but if the weather continues calm iit is expected the sea will SO on be I smooth. Rain has fallen in most parts of the Auckland Province, and particu- : larly in the north. Beyond Russell it fell in torrents on Wednesday, and the (sea was running high off the North Cape j South of Whangarei the gale was not felt with such great force, but the whole of the peninsula had its share of the rain, with very beneficial results. Only .25incli of rain fell for the 24 hours ending at 0 a.m. to-day, states Mr. F. A. F. Burnett, the official Government observer, and this makes the total for the month 1.87 inch. A rapid rise in the barometer took place yesterday afternoon and continued until 10 p.m. Shortly after midnight a further rise began, though rather steadier than yesterday. At 8 a.m. a height of 20.fl inches was registered, and at this reading the barometer remained steady, being higher than it has been since mid-day on Tuesday.
