BLAZE IN HARTLEPOOL

Fire destroyed the timber yards at Hartlepool of Horsley ami Son, which cover eight acres and extend for a distance of two miles. The fire is still Waling nfter twenty hours. The blare involved a terrace of 28 houses which were reduced to empty shells. Houses in six streets were wholly or partly destroyed, and fully 700 are homeless. Fortunately the occupants had timely warning and hurried away their furniture in all sorts of vehicles. Tbe firemen's efforts could not check the fire, but they succeeded in preventing it reaching West Hartlepool, which was At one time threatened. The damage is estimated at fully £1,000,000, but there were no casualties. A gale assisted the spread of the flames. Special trains brought firemen from neig-bouring towns. —(A. and N.Z. Calble.) FIRE IN TOKYO. - PROMINENT B-X-DIN-S BURNED. TOKYO, January 5. A tiro which threatened the main failway station and many of the most prominent buildings in Tokyo, including the Imperial Palace, destroyed the Central Post Office, together with a large foreign holiday mail. The Imperial Household Guard helped tbe firemen, who' devoted considerable attention to keeping the roof of the palace cool by pumping water on it.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
