BUTTER IN LONDON.
PRICES IMPROVE DAILY. GOOD DEMAND FOR N.Z. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright) (Received 2 p.m.) LONDON, January 5. Tlie butter market has improved daily throughout the week, with a good con--1 sumption demand. Australian orrivals i have all been cleared. New Zealand continues to discharge slowly, all selling as soon as available. To-day's quotations of free New Zealand choicest Baited are 125/ to 130/, Australian 114/ to 116/, unsalted 120/ to 122/. The Board of Trade has agreed to the Australian and New Zealand Government's request not to proceed with the sale of the bulk of its stock before January 14. News from Australia with reference to the contemplated action by Auk. tralia and New Zealand concerning the acquisition of butter has stimulated speculation. To-day the Board of Trade sold 500 tons of good grade Australian and New Zealand at 08/ to 108/, equalling the recent week's average sales. —(A and N.Z. Cable.) QUESTION OF-FINANCE. PREMIER NON-COM>M_TTAL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.! PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. Asked to-day if the Government would provide producers with the necessary ■financial backing to enable the purchase • of butter stocks held by the Imperial Government, Mr. Massey told a "Standard " reporter that the Government had not yet considered this phase of the situation. Whether or not such assistance would be forthcoming, he could not say. The result of yesterday's meeting had not yet been communicated to him, and he was not prepared to promise any- ' thing until he knew what the Government was asked to back.
