VALUE OF OPTIMISM.

— —■• 1 . - "KEEP SMILING." The final call of the Auckland Stock Exchange for the present year was held at 10 o'clock this morning. At the close Mr. F. J. Whittaker, on .behalf of the' members, wished the chairman, Mr. George Creagh, peace and happiness throughout the coming year. He said the chairman's optimistic note was one they should all endorse; as the opposite spirit of pessimism left no hope. To be without hope, would be like a sky without sun. The spirit of optimism was one well worth cultivating. Their motto should be "Keep Smiling." "Witb a smile in your eye Let care run by. Things will be better next year." The chairman thanked Mr. Whittaker for his kindly remarks, and the members of the Exchange for the hearty manner in which they were endorsed. They all knew he was an optimist. H e tried always to inculcate that spirit. The pessimist who saw no good in anything and no hope of brighter times was' of no account to the country. The optimist, having hope, did at any rate try, and some times achieved things. A pess'iiruV; could not be expected to do anythin" as he, having no hope for the never tried. In conclusion the chairman' wished members a merry Christmas and a happy holiday season. At the call of Mr. Francis Hull, three hearty cheer s were given for the chairman, vice-chairman, and the executive of the association.
