ABUSE OF THE BEACHES.

(To the Editors Sir,—May I, through your columns, raw the attention of the authorities c&ponsiblc for the pirblie behaviour and ifety on our beaches, particularly Kohilarama Beach, to the reckless, selfish, nd dangerous conduct of a few perons who should ibe wrought to book? >n Sunday week the owner of a red notor cycle appropriated the whole ungth of the Kohi Beach, from wharf to loint, for about an hour or more to est out and race his machine. The ioisc made by the machine was disturbng and irritating to the occupants of all esidenecs facing the beach, while the teach itself, which the little ones are aught to regard as a place of freedom md Hafety, was absolutely unsafe for ihn'Jrtt any child of school age. Having iad such a good time the previous Sunlay, he arrived on Saturday afternoon vith his machine, accompanied by a tifind, also with »■ motor cycle, and lespite the fact that some 400 or 500 >rphans were picnicking on the beach md running little foot races, began the irevious performance—'but two machines ,his time—until warned off iby those in

•harge of the children. The holidays ire upon us, when thousands of chillren will visit this beach, and they ure mtitlod to the protection of the authorises. Another matter requiring attention from the Kohi authorities is the natter of camping. All owners facing the seafront are compelled by law to keep their Jjuildings back, in some :ases 30ft, in others 15ft, and this, rightly, is rigidly enforced; a person, however, can apparently rent a vacant allotment, pay a shilling or two for Lamping permit, and pitch his tents, perform all his personal, toilet, and domestic duties, wholly in front of permanent residences adjoining. This should be immediately rectified.—l am., etc., O'N'-LOOKER.
