SHOP ASSISTANTS.

THE NEW AWARD. The Arbitration Court award in the Auckland retail shop assistants' dispute was hied to-day, the terms being the same as in the recent Southern awards, with minor differences to meet local conditions. The award concerns assistants in boot, hardware, crockery, stationery, fancy goods, furniture, and soft goods retail shops. Junior assistants' wages are fixed as follows:—First year, males 17/6, females 15/; second year, 25/ and 20s; third year, 35/ and 24/; fourth year, -17/6 and 30/; fifth year, 00/ and 35/; thereafter, 77/6 and 40/. Senior males and senior females with not less than seven years' experience are to receive not less than £4 and £2 2/6 respectively; departmental managers and manageresses and 'window dressers to be paid not less than 10/ a week extra. Male adult workers are to be paid a bonus of 13/ a week, females 6/6, all other workers 6/. Wages for foremen and packers are:— In charge of two or more men other than casuals, £4 a/ a week; others £3 15/. Juniors under 17, £1 2/0; 17 to 18, £1 7/6; 18 to 19, £1 17/6; 19 to 20, £2 7/6; 20 to 21, £2 17/6, and thereafter tlic i maximum wage. A bonus of 10/ a week to storemen and packers and 3/6 to juniors is also fixed. The award does not apply to storemen and packers covered by the northern wholesale merchants, storemeSn and packers' award. Casual hands are to be paid 20 per cent extra for males and 33* for other workers, in addition to the rates prescribed in the appropriate wages clause; or at an hourly rate equivalent thereto. Hours of work arc to be regulated by the Shop and Offices Act. Nine holidays are provided for, and an annual holiday of one week on full pay. The award will come into force on January 9, 1922, and is to continue until September 9, 1923. It is to operate throughout the Northern Industrial District, excluding Gisfoornc Judicial District.
