Of all the pathetic memories of lii* i-hildliood few were more touching than Will Crooks' tributes to hi? mother. "She was mother, father, everything to us." lie UM-.l io say. recalling his early days in a little back room in Shirbutt Street. Poplar. Seven souls did this little room hold.

We could not understand why, and protested, but in vain. The fact was that there was not a bite in the house, and she would not allow us to get up until she had gone out and got a meal for u=, Llcavcn alone knows how,"
