CIVIL SERVICE REDUCTION.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —In defence of niy .previous letter, which "Jane" and "Live and Let Live" say are mise-et«.tements, or distortion of fa-cts, I would like to emphasise tiie fact that I can prove them, if necessary. If -Live and Let Live" was to be dismissed from the Civil "Service his chivalrous attitude towards the fair sex would probably change somewhat. Circumstances alter cases. If "A Mere Woman" was to study the present starte of the labour market a bit more closely she would pro'baibly see that I am not throwing bouquets or compliments at her sex. trat plain facts: It is very difficult and heartbreaking for a man to obtain employment of any description, 'be he ever so ■willing. Such is not the ease with women. Of course, it would be infra dignitatem for any ex-Poet and Telegraph women to take up such menial work ac doine6tic duties, lady helps, or probationer nursing, but if they say they are not adaptable to these positions, even if they have spent 20 years at office work, they are not worthy of the name of woman. I did not suggest that women with dependents should be dismissed, or that women should be dismissed indiscriminately, but there are numbers without dependents, and with no higher thought than that of dress and frivolity. These are the ones who should be dispensed with, if any. If, as "Jane" says, the work women perform is equal or superior to that of males, why does the Post and TelegTaph Department allot them epecial duties on the duty sheet? if the labour market was in a liealthv *«•!?• for as male employment of any W J 3 ?, ? m ™™* I would not ■ WL th ' S . c ™ t ™™™ 7 , but to ouu^ h marr >ed and single, thrust P f °»P«ct^S n ? n * , with absolutely no to t o *^ min S «V for some time etc., . ' lor «e one to protest.—l a m ' MLIBET..
