GRAMMAR OLD BOYS.

ANNUAL REUNION. BALL TO-NIGHT. Considering the thousands of Grammar School old boys in Auckland, the attendance of about 70 at the annual dinner of the Association held in »he Town Hall on Friday evening was somewhat disappointing, but what the function lacked ill this respect was compensated for by the enthusiastic spirifc-of the gathering. After the toast of "The King" had been ; drunk the president (Mr. H. L. Turn- , bull) proposed that of the Board of Covernors, and paid a tribute to their , enterprise in tbe general welfare of tbe school. He also mentioned the cordial - relations that had existed between the . Board and the school, and the fact that there were old boys on the Board of Governors- Dr. Robertson replied, and urged the old boys to consider the trend of secondary education, which was restraining the pow-ers of the Board and reducing the advantages of the endowments. Mr. V. R. Meredith mentioned the successes of the school in many spheres in proposing the toast of "The School," and stressed the debt that the scholars owed to their grand old headmaster, Mr. J. W. Tibbs. The latter, in reply, said that the school was indebted to the old boys for the interest they took in the school, thus assisting it to maintain the high position it had attained, scholastically and athletically. (Applause.) After refer, ring by name to old pupils who had achieved distinction in every calling in life, Mr. Tibbs suggested that another honours board inscribed with the names of those who bad served their T'Jhnpirc with distinction or gained eminence in their own calling, would be an inspiration for future scholars, although the work of selecting these names would be very difficult owing to the great number entitled to recognition. Captain A. Duder, replying on behalfof "The 01dres"t Old Boys," spoke reminiscent! y of the work of Dr. Kidd aud his staff at the old school in 18(59, and recounted a number of amusing incidents of early days. Toasts of "Kindred Associations" and "Branch Associations" wire also honoured, and orchestral and vocal items given. This evening, at. the school buildings, Mountain Road, the old boys will give teh annual ball, and there are indications that it will be ev<m a bigger success than usual. Distinctive visitors will be members of the Springboks and JNew Zealand football team.
