THE LEISURELY POST.
(To the Editor.l Sir. —Talking of leisurely postal methods. ,What of a settlement, 40 or perhaps 43 miles by sea from Auckland city, and yet you cannot as a rule get a reply under three weeks. A letter ■ posted in Auckland on Monday is sent | to Cabbage Bay on Wednesday, and lies ' there until the Saturday_when it is carried by mail man to Cape Colville the same night. 'As the outward mail leaves in the morning this letter cannot >be replied to for another week, and it then lies in Cabbage Bay until the Wednesday or Thursday, and it is delivered in Auckland the following day. At times this service is speedier, and it only takes a fortnight to receive a reply. Of course boats pass frequently, but how can bur Government afford to arrange for the delivery of letters to n few settlers? If they want to take up the back country, and make it productive, do they deserve any consideration? Win' can't they stay in the city and enjoy a good mail service, a road, and a school, all of which they lack at present. You cannot blame the Government, for it is a progressive Government. Even the Prime Minister says so, so it must be. To what troal we are progressing I know not. perhaps some correspondent who knows will tell mc. —I am, etc., :n"emo s.
