"It is a favourite trick of certain sporting gentlemen to employ out-of-work girls, ex-soldiers and cripples. Perhaps the sporting gentleman in this case will pay the fines— -£5 and £2 2/ costs in the case of the motber and £20 and £3 3/ costs in the case at the daughter." These were the remarks of a Thames magistrate when a woman and the girl, aged 21, were summoned for keeping a house in Wellington Street, Poplar, for the purpose of -betting. It was stated that the daughter was the chief cnliprit. She was eniployed Qjy a well-known bookmaker.
