RACE IN PACIFIC
BETWEEN TWO CARGO STEAMERS.! With a difference of ten hours" travel-! ling time the Mahana and the Port! Sydney arrived at Auckland after a : close run from Balboa. The Port Sydney, it is stated, left the Panama : Canal port on March 1 in continuation' •of her voyage from New York, eight ! hours ahead of the Mahana_ which was journeying from London. On the first noon out the Mahana reckoned the other vessel to be 120 miles ahead, and for three weeks the Port Sydney remained in front and out of sight. About a week ago etrong headwinds were encountered, and the Mahana gradually made up leeway until last Thursday morning she caught sight of the foremost vessel. During the morning the former vessel overtook the other and left it behind. At 8.35 yesterday morning the Mahana arrived at Auckland, followed by the Port Sydney at 10.20. I The distance covered is estimated by ' the Mahana to be 6518 miles. One of the fruits of the victory is that the Mahana was able to berth yesterday, while the Port Sydney has to remain in the stream until space becomes available at the wharves.
