BIRKENHEAD PROGRESS LEAGUE.
■ The Foresters' Hall, Birkenhead, was well filled last night in response to the notice convening a public meeting to form a progressive league. Mr. A. BarHett was voted to the chair. The meeting was addressed by Mr. Baskett (president of St. Heller's and Kohimarama Progress League), and Mr. _ W. Wilson (town clerk of Northeote) as to the lines the proposed league could function for the advancement of the district without in any way conflicting wl_ the municipal body. On the motion of Mr. Thomas Farrell. seconded by _r. Clement Wrag;e, it was decided to -form a Birkenhead Progressive League, to (be incorporated under the Friendly Societies Act. Mr. T. Farrell was appointed secretary pro 'tern, and tentative rules were adopted. Mr. E G. Skeates. Deputy-Mayor, said the Mayor and Council had been ignored in the formation of the league, and inquired if it was compettent for 'them to Join. The Chairman: They will be heartily welcomed. Mr. Skeates: Then I am a member. Mr. .Albert Hadfleld (a member of the Council) said he was voicing the opinion of many in saying there was something behind the league. The chairman thought it was quite an erroneous impression that anything ulterior was sought by the league. Mr. Thomas Farrell, as one of the conveners of the meeting, explained the objects actuating residents in desiring the league. There was no recreation ground, and lack of town-planning. Everyone was wanted to help, to assist the Council, for the general progress of the borough. The meeting adjourned till Monday night when the election of officers, including a president, two vice-presidents, and a committee of nine, and secretary and treasurer, will take place.
