Following a police raid on his tobacconist t-liop, Arthur Owen appeared before Mr. llarton, ti.M.. charged with keeping a common gaming house. One witness stated that, instructed by the police, hi. look, two doubles with the defendant and pot defendant to write the horses' names on a piece of paper, which was produced as evidence. At the Magistrate's Court to-day. Mat how Livingstone, previously acquitted in the Supreme Court on charges of carrying on the business of a bookmaker, was charged with issuing double cards for races. Counsel for defendant entered a plea of "autrefois acquit," contending that the Supreme Court charges had the accumulated effect of the charges now preferred against Livingstone. The magistrate refused to accept conn. =cl"s plea. declaring that defendant would have to satisfactorily prove that he had ibeen acquitted on an identical charge.
