The husband, a well-to-do corn merchant, refuses to humour his wife even In fhis respect, invoking the example of Mr. Joseph Cannon, father of the House of Representatives and a leading citizen of Danville, whose highly coloured language and Inveterate cigar-smoking are a favourite theme of political cartoonists. Mrs. Harrington, propped up In bed, receives the reporters of the leding American newspapers, and daily discourses to them on the efficacy of fasting as an instrument for the conversion of husbands. Mr. .Harrington Is also the target for innumerable interviewers, to wliose questions whether he will yield he invariably answers: "Never." "If my wife wants to die she can die." he declared. "I've alwbeen a good husband, but I'm as suwuorn as she Is." Mr. 'Harrington has Tetained the services of a nurse to look after ils wife and a lawyer to protect his legal interests should she die.
