STRICKEN AUSTRIA.
NO LOAN FROM ALLIES. POPE MAKES AN APPEAL. (Received S a.m.) PARIS, January 25. It is reported that the Inter-Allied Conference has decided against granting a. loan to Austria, and has referred the question of Austrian nuance to the Allied Trade-Ministers. ROME, January 25. The "Osservatore Bc-mano" states that the Pope, in a special appeal on behalf of Austria, compares that country to a head severed from the body. She is struggling , with the horrors of poverty and despair, and her industries and commerce are stricken. The Pope does not apportion the blame, but deplores the inability of tiie world to afford Austria any relief. He adds that the practical ; solution of the present trouble must be political, and considers it is the first duty of the signatories to the Versailles Peace Treaty to find that solution. — (A. and N.Z.
