BEACH PATROLS AT DEVONPOBT. DEMONSTRATIONS ON BEACHES With a view to instructing swimmers . how to act in cases of drowning, the „ Auckland branch, of the Royal Life Saving Society will give demonstrations t on the Cheltenham beach, near the . : kiosk at noon on January 1, 1 p.m. on ; January 2, and 1.30 p.m. on January 3. t The last demonstration promises to be c particularly spectacular. A system of ( beach patrol is already in operation at , j Vauxhall, Cheltenham, and the wharf , beaches at Devonport, with the result c that the bather can disport himself in ( the water with every confidence. i The beach pftrol is comprised of i members of the Society who have fully « qualified as life-savers. These members are on duty at the stations which are ( clearly marked by a standard njjtice t board. The men are at hand at all j times, and when required their services j are available immediately. When off i duty they are free to give instruction ■ in swimming and life-saving. The ; patrols are maintained at the expense i of the society, and in order to defray i a portion of the cost a number of the i ladies will take up collections at the < coming demonstrations. i The Royal 7>ife Saving Society was i founded in 1800 with a view of saving i life from drowning by some practical method. The society has adopted five j methods of rescuing, and three for re- , leasing one from the grip of a drowning . person. In 1010 Mr. W. Henry, chief . secretary of the society, founded the •; New Zealand branch at Auckland. ;
