COADJUTOR BISHOP'S RECEPTION

ADDRESSES PRESENTED. The Roman Catholic Coadjutor-Bishop of Auckland, Dr. J. M. Liston, was accorded an official reception at St. Patrick's Cathedral last evening- before a very large congregation. A guard of honour wa« formed at the cathedral enI trance by members of the Auckland ! branch of the Hibernian Society. The Coadjutor-Bishop was presented with addresses of welcome by the Eight Rpv. Monsignor Mahoney, V.G., on behalf of tho clergy of the diocese, by Mr. J. I*. Kalaugher, on behalf of the laity, by the Very Rev. Dean Cahill, for the Catholic Federation, and 'by Mr. M. J. Sheehan, for the Auckland Hiberian Society. : Dr. Liston. in reply, acknowleged the great warmth of hie welcome to Auckland, whence he had come to help and cheer a noble veteran of the Church's army, which still had great work to do in tho Dominion if religion were not to be submerged in the ever-rising waters of modern democracy. Touching upon education, Dr. Liston said that tho Roman Catholic Church claimed that in a free country where all were equal, all should stand on the same ground in the law. What they asked for in the chape of Catholic schools, and were determined to pet at all costs, had operated in England for IS years past with satisfaction, and had been adopted in Scotland at the i request of the education authorities. ("Hitherto our claims here have been disj regarded," he added, "but I have sutfii cient confidence in the fairness of my i fellow countrymen to believe that we shall eventually get satisfaction." During , the service Zingarelli's Laudate was rendered by tho full choir, the solo j 'being taken by Mr. H. Carter. The ' Rosary wae recited by Father Bradley. Miss E. Lynch rendered the solo, "Hear Ye, Israel," and Mr. Dixon, "Ye People Rend Your Hearts." Otter soloists were Mr?. \Vhyte. Mi*s H. Coleman, Miss de Silva, Messrs. E. Dobbs and Venables. Mr. L. J. Whittaker was conducter of i the choir and Mr. Q. J. Allen organist.
