I i p I Looking very bright and happy after . six weeks on the water some 400 settlers landed yesterday afternoon from the Shaw Savill and Albion steamer Arawa, which arrived from Southampton on Saturday evening. The total passenger list was 487 souls, of which 54 were first class, 75 second and 385 third. There was also a further contingent of young women who Intend taking up domestic work in the Dominion. These were under the charge of Mrs. Nancy ! Milner. I The new arrivals were met by Mr. H. D. Thomson, I'nder-Secretary for Immigration, and Adjutant Greene and Mr. C. Davies (Salvation Army Immigration Department. They were also met by friends on landing, the exchange of greetings in this respect being particu-larly-cordial. Some, little difficulty was experienced in accommodating the new- ( comers owing to the heavy rush already ; caused by the Christmas visitors to the . city. The difficulty was eventually j overcome, and of the 130 passengers for i Auckland, lodging arrangement* were I made for 00, and Ihe remainder pro- ! vided for by their relatives and friends. ' The Defence Department also provided ; ex-soldiers of the party. with temporary sh.nke-downs in the Drill Hall. The passengers thoroughly eninved themselves, parsing the time with the usual games and pastimes. Christmas Day was celebrated on board in the good oldfashioned way. Last evening the 321 passengers for the south left by special express at 0.20 p.m.
