TIMBER AT AUCTION.
QUESTION OF PERMITS. How do the Government regulations for the conservation of building material affect sales of timber by auction? is a question that has been asked more than once. It is stated that a person purchasing timber at a public auction is n'H required to produce a permit from the Auckland City Council, such as is required by a man fjiving an order to a Umber mill. The result is that, in some cases people who urgently want timber and have not been able to procure a per mit, have gone t° the auction and the price has in some cases pone up far be< yond the price regulated by the Board of Trade. It is understood the attention of the authorities has been called to this phase of the timber problem and that steps are likely to be taken to bring auctions more into line with the other sources of supply.
