RETURNED SOLDIERS.

PURCHASE OF STOCK. The executive of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association met last evening,. Mr. G. Elliot presiding. The matter of the payment for stock purchased by soldier settlers again came up for consideration, correspondence on the. subject between the Auckland Stock Auctioneers' Association nnd the Minister of Lands, the Hon. I>. H. Outline, being read to the meeting. This disclosed that the auctioneers had decided to refuse to do further business of the kind with the board except on a cash basis, until a speech made at Dargaville on July 31, by Mr. (Ireville, on the subject wiis publicly withdrawn. Ultimately the matter of the stock auctioneers' attitude was referred to a sub-commit-tee to interview the former's secretary.

The Victoria League wrote asking the association to co-operate with its graves committee in beautifying the soldiers' portion of the Waikumete cemetery. A letter was also received from the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, regarding the proposed memorial obelisk nt tho cemetery, suggesting that the association should proceed with its scheme rather than wait for the Government to complete ono. He enclosed a letter from the secretary of the War Graves Committee, who intimated that the Government might offer to remove the bodies of soldiers buried in other cemeteries to the_ Waikumete cemetery, and might consider erecting a memorial entrance and shelter there. A sub-ebmmittee was appointed to deal with the matter of the memorial. The secretary 'vyas empowered to obtain the necessary labour to clean up the graves, a suggestion being made that boy scouts or schoolboys be invited to do the work.
