PENAL STORAGE CHARGE.
m HARBOUR BOARD DEFINES POSITION. The committee of the Auckland Harbour Board which considered the penal storage charge now imposed on importers who leave poods bej r ond a specified time in the freight sliedß reported to the Board yesterday that thia charge should lie levied "nftcr the seventh night upon which poods are on storage (including poods under examination), and that where possible credit b» given for amounts overpaid." Requests which came before the committee for remissions of the charpe were declined.
nn the application of Messrs. Oruickshank. Miller and Company for a rebate of the charge the chairman (Mr. H. T). Heather) moved that a letter bo sent them oxplaining the position. Mr. Carr took strong exception to statements in the letter reflecting on officials of the board.
Mr. A. .T. Entrican pointed out-that sometimes identification of goods shipped on manifest "to order" was difficult, and to notify shippers to receive them all but impossible.
The chairman said that no fewer than 1500 importers were using the -wharves at present, but wherever possible importers were notified before the penalty clause was impoacd.
