"DUMPING."
THE AMERICAN METHOD. Tn these days when the cost of living is the concern of all sections of the community, the cfTeot of what is known .i« "dumping"' in the Dominion of goode manufactured in overseas countries is of interest. Speaking on this subject at the annual meeting of the (Xew Zealand Association of Rritish Manufacturers and Agente In Wellington, Mr. J. L. MoTrfeon threw a sidelight on that phase of business as follows:—"'Before the war," he saH, "I knew that American manufacturers did a certa : n amount of 'dumping,' here and in the 'English market, of manufactured poods. I had a case of that kind brought under my notice in 1907. 1 saw in (Broadway, Xew York, and in other towns of the States an article, if I remember rifrhtly at 24'Ai. The same article was sold to mc in Holborn, London, a+- 16/ C. Later a local importer explained to mc that these goJods were cold to him at l"2/6, and that it was the poVcy of Americane to keep their own prices up in America by selling surplus manufacture in England and her polonies. In England fehev were admitted free, and in New Zealand, at that time, they conic in under the same tariff as British goods."
