DAVIS CUP COMPETITORS.
FAMOUS LAWK TENNIS FLAYERS. WORLD CHAMPIONS. Auckland wlil shelter the most iamous famous lawn tennis players in the world this evening. Strangely enough the mail boats bringing defenders and challengerfor the Davis Cup, coining from opposite ends of the earth, will meet in the hai - bour within a few hours of one another. The Niagara has on board the Americans who went through the eliminating rounds successfully, Messrs. W. T. Tylden (world's champion, W. M. Johnston (runner-up in the Nationals championship), W. Washburn and S. Hardy (captain). W'ashiburn is the tenth player on the American ranking lUt ;of world players, and Hardy also plays i a good game, but it is not likely u-nat either of them will 'be called upon to j play unless something happens to the first pair. The Australians, coming over in t!ie ; Maheno, Messrs. Norman E. Brook- , -. G. L. Patterson, P. O'Hara Wood, ani E. M. Heath, are to defend the cup, which it will be remembered was lttained in Australia last year a.s a result of Brookes and Patterson beating the 1 Knglish team, (i. M. Ollivier. the ! Other passengers in- | eluded several New South Wa!o< players 1 who are to meet a team of New Zea- ; landers, the matches to start on January 1. after the Davis Cup matt lies which begin on the specially prepared ground on the Auckland Domain on December 28. A civic reception will be given in the Auckland City Council Chambers at the ! Town Hall to-morrow at noon to the American competitors. Citizens are invited to be present.
