WHAKATANE MEMORIAL.

» (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, this day. A memorial by the borough to .fallen soldiers was. unveiled this afternoon by the Mayor, Mr. F. Amoor, who, made touching reference to the gallant deeds of our boys. One minute's silence was then observed. Mr. M. Douglas (president of the Whakatane R.S.A.) and A. C. Sutherland (Harbour Board), and Mr, Reid (Chairman of the County Council) made appropriate speeches. The monument is 10 feet high, of I best Kakaka rough-cast granite. Four polished marble slabs adorn the sides, and contain the inscription: "Erected by the citizens of Whakatane to the memory of our. brave boys who made the supreme sacrifice in the great war, I 1914-18." It also bears the date, November 11, 1920. The memorial will have three lamps, each of a thousand candle power.
