DAYLIGHT BAKING.
CONFIDENCE RESOLUTIONS. During the last week delegates representing the various bakers and pastrycooks' unions of New Zealand have been meeting in conference in Wellington. Matters of importance to the trade were discussed and the following decisions arrived at: (1) That bread and cakes of all descriptions for sale to the public fchall be made and baked between the Lours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. (2) Sunday work to be prohibited. (3) This section ■hall not apply to doughmaking. (4) That all bread shall be twelve hours old before being sold or delivered to the public. A deputation waited on the Hon. Sir William Herries, Minister of Labour, In connection with the above decisions •nd urgfia that a bill should be introduced embodying the proposals outlined. The Minister gave a sympathetic hearing to the delegates, and said that a •trong case had been presented. If it did not increase the price of bread there r Was something to be said In favour of daylight baking. The Minister suggested that an amendment of the Factories Act would meet the position more «xpeditiously and would bo preferable to presenting a bill so late in the session. The daylight baking question was referred to the Prime Minister, Right Hon. W. F. Massey, when Minister of Labour, last session. Sir William Herries promised to consult Mr. Massey on (the matter and see if the proposals pre■ented could be acted upon.
