LAWN TENNIS.
(By FOTFAULT.) Secretaries of all the local clubs report that applications for membership j still keep coming in, but as resignations j nre still conspicuous by their absence the chances of applicants being successful are pretty remote. One secretary reported that there were no less than j 40 applications, including eight held ! over from last season, from ladies de- I sirous of joining his. club, but as yet not one single resignation had been received, i From this it will be seen how neees- j sary it is for some move to be made, | either by the association or by some of ] our local bodies in the way of providing j more lawns. The loss of the Domain j courts is now being keenly felt as these ' were the only public grass courts in Auckland. In the cable news on Wednesday it was reported that tile Tennis | Association in Sydney had made a move | and secured an area at Rushcutter's i Kay, where they proposed to construct no less than 40 courts; , The local association, is fully aware of ; the necessity for more courts in Auck- ', land, but the great stumbling block each ; time is finance. If the Auckland City Council could see its way clear to lay : down a dozen or more courts at the Stanley Street entrance to the Domain > Drive, they need have no fear about ! their popularity, and I feel confident they would be a good paying proposition as well.
